Missing Scenes

This episode is one of a number in season five which were filmed for a broadcast length of approximately 44 minutes, but which were transmitted in edited form by UPN in order to slice two minutes off the running time. The transcripts below are of the scenes and scene fragments that are missing from that UPN broadcast, based on a comparison between the first airing on UPN and the full version of the episode. Please note that an entirely different set of cuts may have been made on subsequent repeats of the episode by UPN, and that syndication reruns seem to be showing the episodes intact.

Dialogue shown in italic type is only included in the full version of the episode. Dialogue shown in normal type is in both versions. Scene start timings are approximate, rounded up or down to the nearest minute, and are based on the UK PAL broadcast format (25 frames per second).

Vision Quest/Chakotay's Quarters. 28 minutes.

[They're just a lot of talk. Sometimes I wish they were more quiet. They like to talk.] [I'm afraid.] [That's it! All over! The fight's been cancelled on medical grounds!]

As part of his vision quest, Chakotay sees his homeworld, and the old grandfather he thought crazy.

Chakotay:	I'm sorry! Please, come back!
Grandfather:	They got away.
Chakotay:	Grandfather. Where did you go?
Grandfather:	Some people were shouting at me. They were going for a walk and they wanted me to come along. Oh, it's hard to follow them. Oh god, they go to strange places.
Chakotay:	I'm supposed to be watching you. We're going to get in trouble if we don't go back home.
Grandfather:	Be a good boy and go. We understand.
Chakotay:	You have to come with me.
Grandfather:	They say you can come with us.
Chakotay:	There's nobody else here.
Grandfather:	They say you're just like we are.
Chakotay:	I'm not! I'm not like you!
Grandfather:	It's not so bad. When you get used to it, they're not so bad. They're just a lot of talk. Sometimes I wish they were more quiet. They like to talk.
Chakotay:	Come home.
Grandfather:	No. I'm too tired. This is a nice place. A nice place to call home. Hmm...
Computer:	Begin round one.
Grandfather:	Did you hear that?
Chakotay:	No.
Grandfather:	Yes you did. There's a lot of them this time!
Chakotay:	Tell them to go away!
Grandfather:	Go away. They've got other ideas.
Chakotay:	I have to go home.
Grandfather:	They're... they're coming for you.
Announcer:	The challenger, Chakotay!

Suddenly the scene of the vision quest switches to Chakotay's boxing ring holosimulation.

Boothby:	Better late than never. They almost scrubbed the bout.
Chakotay:	I'm afraid.
Boothby:	I know you are. You'd be a liar if you said anything else.
Chakotay:	But I've always been afraid.
Boothby:	I know that too.
Announcer:	The champion, Kid Chaos.
Doctor:	That's it! All over! The fight's been cancelled on medical grounds! Put them down, let's go. I hear there's some bear baiting at the arena next door! Have fun!

The vision quest ends. Chakotay gradually returns to consciousness, to find himself in his quarters with Paris and the Doctor hovering over him.

Paris:	He's coming out of it.
Chakotay:	You stopped the fight?
Paris:	You were stuck in the vision quest.
Chakotay:	I've got to go back.
Doctor:	You're going nowhere but Sickbay.
Chakotay:	Let me go.
Paris:	Calm down. It's over for you.
Chakotay:	No. Let me get in the ring!
Paris:	Chakotay...
Chakotay:	Let me back in the ring. Let me...
